A prosthetic tooth, called a dental bridge, is held in place by abutments on either side of the gap. Dental bridges use artificial teeth to replace missing teeth permanently. A dental bridge replaces one or more missing teeth and prevents drooping and misshapen lips and cheeks. Want to know if a dental bridge is the best option for you? What are Dental Bridges?

A dental bridge is a fixed dental restoration consisting of one or more dentures in the space between two or more crowns on either side of the gap, held in place by abutments. These artificial teeth or pontics can be made from various materials including gold, metal, porcelain, composite resins, or mixtures thereof.

What are the Types of Dental Bridges?

Dental bridges come in four types: conventional, cantilever, Maryland, and implant-supported.

Traditional Bridge. In traditional dental bridges, each abutment tooth is fitted with a crown to hold the denture in place. The most common form of dental bridge is a traditional bridge, which can be used when there are still healthy teeth on either side of the gap left by the missing tooth.

Cantilever Bridge. A regular dental bridge and a cantilever bridge are the same thing. However, with a cantilever dental bridge, a dental crown bonded to just one abutment tooth holds the pontic in place. One natural tooth must be present adjacent to the gap caused by the lost tooth for a cantilever bridge.

Maryland Dental Bridge. Maryland dental bridges use two natural abutments, one on each side of the space, like a traditional bridge. A traditional bridge, on the other hand, places crowns on the abutment teeth, and Maryland bridges use a metal or porcelain framework attached to the back of the abutment teeth. Like a natural bridge, it can only be used if there are natural teeth on either side of the gap left by the missing tooth.

Implant-supported Bridge. In implant-restrained bridges, dental implants are utilized rather of crowns or frames. One implant is surgically placed to hold the bridge in place for every missing tooth. The bridge may include a pontic hanging between implant-supported crowns if placing one implant to replace each lost tooth is not feasible.

How do dental bridges work?

Typically, a dental bridge needs two appointments.

  • The dental bridge dentist prepares the abutment tooth at the first visit. The enamel and dentin are then removed to make room for the crown.
  • Your teeth will be photographed or digitally scanned by your dentist. Scans or models are used in dental laboratories to create bridges, artificial teeth and crowns. A temporary bridge should be worn to protect the exposed mouth until the permanent bridge is completed.
  • Your dentist will remove and replace the temporary bridge during your second visit. An expert will inspect the bridge and make any necessary changes.

FAQs for Dental Bridges

Can teeth decay under a bridge?

Yes, teeth under permanent bridges can become decayed. It often occurs when there is a gap between the bridge and the gums or when the hygiene of the teeth is poor. Food gets stuck and bacteria start growing. Bacteria interact with saliva and plaque builds up. If tartar is not removed, it can lead to gingivitis and periodontitis. You can avoid this by brushing, flossing, gargling, and seeing a dentist to clean your teeth.

How long after dental bridge can I eat?

After wearing a crown or bridge, wait at least an hour before eating. Hard or sticky foods such as chips, candy, popcorn granules, and raw carrots should be avoided. Mashed potatoes, rice, and scrambled eggs can be substituted.

Often one or two teeth are replaced. In rare cases, a dental bridge replaces up to four teeth. Especially if you have strong healthy teeth in your mouth that can connect with the crown.
