What are Partial Dentures?

A partial denture is a removable form of dental device that consists of one or more fake teeth that rest on a plastic or metal base the same color as the roof of your mouth. Partial dentures replace one or more missing teeth to address the practical and aesthetically negative implications of missing teeth. Additionally, partial dentures are available for people who are ineligible for or unable to afford a bridge due to a lack of teeth to support one.

What are the Types of Partial Dentures?

There are two kinds of partial dentures: detachable partial dentures and fixed partial dentures. You may take your detachable partial denture out of your mouth whenever possible. Because it is secured in your mouth, you cannot remove a fixed partial denture.

Acrylic clasp removable partial dentures

Acrylic Clasp Partial Dentures. The most affordable partial denture is acrylic clasp partial dentures with replaceable acrylic flippers. It employs acrylic clasps, which are less effective than cast metal clasps and should only be used as a temporary remedy due to their lack of aesthetics and uncomfortable to wear.

flexible nylon partial dentures

Flexible Partial Denture. Fixed partial denture clasps are gum-colored, making them less apparent than acrylic clasps. These are alternatives for folks who are allergic to acrylic. It is more pleasant than acrylic, but the comfort and beauty come at a price since flexible partial dentures are more costly.

Fixed Bridge Denture

Fixed Bridge. A fixed bridge is permanently linked to the surrounding teeth or dental implants. The patient must have healthy surrounding teeth while they are filed down and prepared to support the crowns.

Implant supported fixed Bridge denture

Implant-supported Fixed Bridge. Small posts of biocompatible titanium are permanently implanted in your mouth to support a fixed bridge. This type of partial denture is indicated for individuals who are missing neighboring teeth or wish not to compromise their remaining teeth.

How does the Partial Dentures Process Work?

Because partial dentures are custom-made for you, a process is followed to ensure that they fit, look, and perform as desired. The partial dentures procedure typically includes the following phases.

  1. A dental examination. A dental exam is the first step in determining the state of your teeth and oral health. During the inspection, we will look for any signs of disease, tooth rot, or past dental work that might interfere with the fit of the dentures. Before fitting the dentures and withdrawing them, we will also search for any teeth that may need to be extracted.
  2. Making dentures. We will measure and shape your teeth to ensure that your dentures fit precisely after confirming that you are an appropriate candidate for partial dentures and that your gums have fully healed. The lab will make the dentures based on the parameters provided by these measurements.
  3. Fitting the dentures. Our office will contact you for a fitting once the dentures are completed. Wearing it should not cause you any discomfort or other issues. Then, if necessary, we modify your dentures.

It will take some time for you to become used to using your prosthesis. Once you’ve accustomed to your dentures, they’ll have the same function and control over your teeth. However, you may first have difficulty eating and speaking with it.
